A Control Speed of 80 km/h for Rural Roads in Germany

In 2021, about 60% of the people who died in road traffic died on Germany’s rural roads (serious injuries 40% (21,778)). This was almost 1,500 men, women and children in the year before last. The main cause of accidents is excessive speed. These are predominantly driving accidents or accidents in longitudinal traffic. The available scientific studies of recent years also proved beyond doubt the direct connection between inappropriate speed and serious accidents and that lower speed dramatically reduces the consequences of accidents. Across the EU, 52% of fatal road accidents occur on rural roads.
